Accelerated Reader (AR)

Q: What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
A: In a nutshell, Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program with a bank of comprehension tests. Students begin by taking a test (STAR test) on the computer, which determines their reading level ‘zone.’ Students then have the opportunity to read books in their zone and take a reading comprehension quiz on the computers in their classroom or the media center. Students earn points for doing well on the test, which will in turn get them closer to the trimester AR goal. Their classroom teacher has set each student’s goal based on their reading abilities.
Q: When will my student take the STAR test and begin participating in the Accelerated Reader Program?
A: All students in grades 2nd through 6th grade will take the STAR test in September and participate in AR. Your student’s teacher will present the results of the test so you know which ‘zone’ your student is in and can monitor their progress toward their goal. Kindergarten and first graders will take the STAR test when they become beginning readers at their individual pace.
Q: Can my student read an Accelerated Reader book at home?
A: Yes, your student can and should be reading an AR book at home and school. Most classroom teachers expect students to read their AR book at home every night as part of their homework.
Q: Are all books in Olinda’s Media Center Accelerated Reader books?
A: Basically yes, and we are always working on purchasing more books for our school and classroom libraries. The program is web-based this year with us having a larger collection of quizzes. This allows students the opportunity to read books from our school and classroom libraries, home, and any books borrowed from the Brea Library as well.
Q: How do I know which books are Accelerated Reader books?
A: First, most of the books in our school’s library are labeled on the book spine with the zone level. Secondly, for all other books, your students can access the Accelerated Program website at www.arbookfind.com. Click on Student and enter the title of the book. Once you find the correct book, it will show the book level and the point value.

Q: How will I know how my student is doing on his/her AR tests?
A: After your student takes a test here at school, he/she will get a computer printout that show how they did on that particular test. This information will be used by both you and your student’s teacher in helping select appropriately leveled books and reaching their AR goal at the end of each trimester. In addition, you can sign-up to use the Renaissance Home Connect Website from any computer at your home with an Internet Connection. Q: What if I still have more questions?
A: Please feel free to contact your student’s classroom teacher.
